This self-study course is for sighted learners who have no prior knowledge of braille. Students receive all the materials and tuition needed to complete the course, split over four assignments, and one opportunity to take the examination.  

The course includes the following:  

  • The braille alphabet
  • All the contractions of Unified English Braille
  • Punctuation signs
  • Basic numbering and capitalisation
  • Basic formatting and typeforms.

It does not cover any of the following:  

  • Advanced notation
  • Specialist codes (eg mathematics, science, music, etc)
  • Skills in teaching braille to blind individuals.

Enrolment dates  

There are two intakes for the course each year: 1st May and 1st October. The closing date for receipt of applications for each intake is 22nd April and 22nd September respectively. Any applications received after these dates will be held until the next enrolment deadline.
