Writing firstly of his childhood in West Wales between the wars the author then recounts his experiences as a 'nipper' on a coastal sailing ketch which sailed to ports in Holland, France and down the Rhine. He recalls too, his early mentor, Tansy Lee, who had been at sea for sixty-six years and had known sailors who had been at Trafalgar. The narrative ends with the outbreak of the Second World War when the author joins the Royal Navy.
