About RNIB
RNIB (Royal National Institute of Blind People) is the leading sight loss charity in the UK. We offer practical and emotional support to blind and partially sighted people and campaign to break down barriers that stop people with sight loss living the life they want to lead.
As part of this mission, a key priority is to change public perceptions and behaviours. We’re asking people to see sight loss differently, reversing inaccurate perceptions and transforming communities so that everyone expects and embraces equal participation from people with sight loss.
We’re also committed to building a fully accessible society. This will make life better for everyone, not only for people with sight loss. We campaign for design and environment standards that are accessible by default. It’s important that the public, including decision-makers across society, automatically consider and include people with sight loss in every context.
Our 10-year strategy
Our ambitious strategy is designed to inspire and drive meaningful change. Our three main focus areas are:
-
1Practical and emotional support for 100 per cent of secondary eye care patients.
-
2Help everyone with sight loss to build practical, technological, and psychological skills so that they can live their fullest life.
-
3Improve infrastructure and transport so that everyone with sight loss can make spontaneous journeys and travel the way they want to.
Why our support is needed more than ever
Today around two million people live with sight loss in the UK. Everyday challenges range from limited access to treatment and services, to a lack of emotional and practical support. Among those of working age, only one in four people with sight loss is in employment. Educational attainment is unacceptably worse for people with sight loss, and feelings of isolation are also unacceptably high.
We know that numbers of people with sight loss will increase dramatically. By 2050, around 500 people could start to lose their sight every day – that’s one person every three minutes.
