January is Glaucoma Awareness Month – but what is glaucoma? Put simply, glaucoma is the name of a group of eye conditions where there's damage to the optic nerve. It often has no symptoms, so regular eye tests are important.

If you want to know more about glaucoma or are looking for tips on putting eye drops in, we’re here to help.

Our free Understanding Glaucoma booklet explains glaucoma, its causes, different types, monitoring, changes, and coping strategies. It’s available in large print, braille and audio. You can also ask our expert eye health team questions by calling 0303 123 9999 or emailing helpline@rnib.org.uk.

It’s important to be consistent with your eye drops for glaucoma. Here are five tips to help you apply your eye drops perfectly every time:

1. Create a daily routine. Take your eye drops daily at the same time, use phone reminders or link them to a routine like brushing your teeth.

2. Follow the storage instructions on your eye drop bottle to ensure effectiveness and routinely check expiration dates.

3. If you struggle with applying eye drops consult your healthcare provider or pharmacist for guidance. You can also find eye drop dispensers on our Shop. These are designed to make it easier to get drops in your eyes.

4. Consistency is key. Use eye drops as prescribed long term to protect against future damage by controlling eye pressure, even if your vision seems unchanged.

5. Communicate for better care. If you experience side effects or run out of medication, contact your healthcare provider or pharmacist promptly to stay on track.
