This self-study course is for sighted learners who have no prior knowledge of braille. Students receive all the materials and tuition needed to complete the course, split over four assignments, and one opportunity to take the examination.

Enrolment dates  

There are two intakes for the course each year: 1 May and 1 October. The closing date for receipt of applications for each intake is 22 April and 22 September respectively. Any applications received after these dates will be held until the next enrolment deadline.  

Please note: You will not receive a physical product when purchasing this course. All course material will be sent to you via email. Please ensure you download and complete the application form (DOCX) found in the ‘User Guides’ tab on this page and return it prior to the course deadline. 

The course includes the following:  

  • The braille alphabet.
  • All the contractions of Unified English Braille.
  • Punctuation signs.
  • Basic numbering and capitalisation.
  • Basic formatting and typeforms.

It does not cover any of the following:  

  • Advanced notation.
  • Specialist codes (for example, mathematics, science, music, etc).
  • Skills in teaching braille to blind individuals.
