Bring your garden, balcony or window box to life with these bee-friendly seed balls.
A must-hive gift for plant lovers who treasure bees, whether they're experienced gardeners or just starting to develop green fingers, these seed balls are easy to use and will produce a mix of pretty, tactile, bee-friendly native wildflowers to delight humans and bees alike! In addition, chamomile and wild marjoram will scent the air during the day, while night-flowering catchfly will fragrance the night air.
Created by conservation scientists, Seedball offers a new twist on an ancient technique for increasing seed germination rates – helping to fill our gardens, balconies and window boxes with native wildflowers, bees and butterflies.
Native wildflowers are naturally slow to germinate, and loosely scattered seed can often be eaten by ants, birds and mice. Seedball helps to solve this problem by encasing the seed in a protective ball of clay, compost and chilli.
A barrier of dried outer clay means that the seed is inaccessible to predators, and once sufficient water permeates the clay, the seed inside will begin to germinate – helped along by the nutrients and minerals contained within the ball. The chilli powder continues to deter slugs and snails while the seed ball slowly degrades and the seeds sprout.
Seed balls are incredibly easy to use – simply scatter on top of soil or compost (no digging or expertise required!) in spring or autumn, and nature will do the rest. One tin of seed balls will cover one square metre in a garden bed or three to five medium sized pots (leave at least 10cm between each ball).
This Bee Mix tin of 20 seed balls (each containing about 30 seeds) will produce a selection of native bee-friendly wildflowers designed to attract honey bees, bumblebees and solitary bees (such as mason bees and mining bees), helping to support the biodiversity and ecosystem of your garden. Perennials include: Foxglove, Viper’s-bugloss, Birdsfoot trefoil, Wild marjoram, and Red clover. The mix also contains extra pollinator-friendly annuals to help ensure flowers in the first year: Cornflower, Chamomile, Corn marigold & Night-flowering catchfly. After use, you can reuse the tin to store pin badges, paperclips, or other small items.
Please note, Foxglove is toxic if eaten.
