Seedball poppy tube against a white background
New

Add a splash of colour to your garden or window box with these really easy-to-use seed balls and watch them bring all the birds (and pollinators) to your yard.

An ideal gift for plant lovers, whether they're experienced gardeners or just starting to develop green fingers, these seed balls are easy to use and will produce swathes of scarlet flowers that not only look beautiful, but also attract wildlife.

Created by conservation scientists, Seedball offers a new twist on an ancient technique for increasing seed germination rates – helping to fill our gardens, balconies and window boxes with native wildflowers, bees and butterflies.

Native wildflowers are naturally slow to germinate, and loosely scattered seed can often be eaten by ants, birds and mice. Seedball helps to solve this problem by encasing the seed in a protective ball of clay, compost and chilli.

A barrier of dried outer clay means that the seed is inaccessible to predators, and once sufficient water permeates the clay, the seed inside will begin to germinate – helped along by the nutrients and minerals contained within the ball. The chilli powder continues to deter slugs and snails while the seed ball slowly degrades and the seeds sprout.

Seed balls are incredibly easy to use – simply scatter on top of soil or compost (no digging or expertise required!) in spring or autumn, and nature will do the rest. One tube of seed balls will cover one square metre in a garden bed or three to five medium sized pots (leave at least 10cm between each ball).

Common poppies are not just popular with people, these bright red, native, annual wildflowers are fantastic for pollinators and garden birds and a stunning addition to any wildflower garden. Poppies will also grow happily in window boxes or other small growing spaces. And this is a gift that keeps giving, as the poppies will reseed themselves so you get new plants the following year.

This tube of 20 seed balls (each containing about 100 poppy seeds) will produce beautiful bright red flowers from May to July.

By purchasing this product, you will be supporting the work we do at RNIB to make every day better for those affected by sight loss.
